Roaches in the Kitchen: Why They Keep Coming Back

October 17, 2026

Seeing one roach in the kitchen is unpleasant. Seeing them again after you have cleaned and sprayed is frustrating. There are clear reasons roaches return, and most of them are out of sight.

Why roaches keep coming back

The German cockroach, the most common roach indoors, breeds fast. One female can produce hundreds of young in a year, and the eggs are protected inside a hard case that many sprays do not reach. For every roach you see, many more stay hidden during the day.

Store-bought sprays often scatter roaches into the walls and into other rooms instead of reaching the nest. The problem moves for a while, and then it returns.

Signs of a growing problem

Roaches are mostly active at night, so seeing them during the day often means their hiding spots are full. Other signs include droppings that look like pepper or coffee grounds in drawers and corners, brown smear marks along edges, egg cases behind appliances, and a musty, oily smell in cabinets. The sooner the hiding places are found, the easier the problem is to control.

Where they hide and how they get in

Roaches look for warmth, moisture and food. In the kitchen they hide behind the fridge and the stove, under the sink, inside cabinet hinges, and in cracks around counters and baseboards. They come in through gaps around plumbing, with grocery bags and cardboard boxes, and, in apartments and attached homes, from the unit next door.

Why treating the nest matters

Wiping up the roaches you see does not touch the ones breeding in hidden spots. An exterminator looks for the places where they gather, treats those areas with products made for indoor use, and checks again on a return visit to catch the next generation as it hatches. Baits placed in cracks and crevices reach roaches where they live, which a surface spray often cannot.

What you can do at home

Fix dripping faucets and leaks, keep food in sealed containers, wipe crumbs off counters and floors, and take out the trash every night. Seal cracks around pipes and baseboards where you can, and do not keep stacks of paper bags or cardboard in the kitchen. These habits make the kitchen less attractive to roaches, and they help a treatment work.
