Mice in the Walls? Signs You Shouldn't Ignore
October 17, 2026
A few sounds in the wall at night are easy to ignore. But mice rarely live alone, and a pair can turn into a large group within a few months. Knowing the early signs helps you act before the problem spreads through the house.
Signs of mice in the walls
Scratching, scurrying or squeaking at night, especially in walls, ceilings and behind cabinets, is often the first clue. Then look for droppings: small, dark and shaped like grains of rice, usually along walls, in drawers and under sinks.
Other signs include gnaw marks on food boxes, baseboards or wires, greasy rub marks along walls and around holes, and nests made of shredded paper, fabric or insulation. A sharp, stale smell in a closed room or cabinet can also mean mice are nesting nearby. Pets that stare at one spot on the wall or paw at the gap under an appliance are often hearing something you cannot.
Why fall is the time to act
As nights get colder, mice look for warm, dry places with easy access to food. Fall is when most of them move indoors. A mouse can squeeze through a gap the size of a dime, so openings around pipes, vents, garage doors and the foundation are enough. Once inside, they breed quickly and settle into wall voids, attics and crawl spaces for the winter.

Why it is worth calling early
Mice chew electrical wiring, which can be a fire risk, and they contaminate food and surfaces with droppings and urine. Traps and store-bought baits may catch a few, but they do not close the way in. New mice keep arriving as long as the entry points stay open.
What an exterminator looks for
An exterminator inspects the inside and the outside of the home to find where mice are getting in and where they are nesting. The plan usually combines removal with rodent exclusion: sealing gaps around pipes, vents and the foundation so new mice cannot follow. A follow-up visit checks that the activity has stopped.
In the meantime, keep food in sealed containers, clean up crumbs and pet food at night, and do not leave cardboard boxes stacked against the walls of the garage or basement.
